WHAT IS GELATO?

Gelato is basically the Italian word for ice cream. Made with milk, heavy cream, sugars and stabilizers. Gelato is a healthier alternative because it contains less calories, sugars and fats compared to the regular ice cream. You won’t believe it when you taste the rich flavor and the creamy texture, but, it’s 100% true!

WHAT MAKES GELATO SO MUCH BETTER THAN ICE CREAM?

There are two differences that distinguish Italian gelato from American ice cream. They are the fat content and the air. The first is that gelato is made from milk, not cream, as opposed to American ice cream which contains a mixture of 50% milk to 50% cream. The second is that American ice cream is filled with up to 60% air. Ever wonder why the ice cream in your freezer shrinks after it melts on the way home from the store and then refreezes in the freezer? Well, the air content in gelato is only 30%, giving it a richer and denser flavor. You eat less, but get more. Overall, these differences give Mangiamo Gelato a creamy, smooth texture which is rich in flavor. Bottom line is that gelato tastes better and is a healthy alternative to American ice cream.

WHERE DID GELATO COME FROM?

Gelato is a popular Italian frozen dessert that originated in Italy. Its history dates back to ancient Rome and Egypt, where people would mix crushed ice or snow with fruit juices, honey, and other flavorings to create a refreshing treat. However, the modern version of gelato is usually attributed to the Renaissance period in Italy, specifically to the region of Florence.

One popular legend credits the Florentine architect and artist Bernardo Buontalenti with inventing gelato in the 16th century. Buontalenti was tasked with organizing a lavish feast to celebrate the arrival of the Spanish delegation in Florence. He supposedly created gelato as part of the dessert offerings and impressed everyone with his creation.

Gelato differs from traditional ice cream in that it has a lower fat content, as it typically contains more milk and less cream. It also has less air incorporated during the churning process, resulting in a denser, smoother, and more intense flavor profile. Since its invention, gelato has become an iconic Italian dessert, enjoyed around the world.
